Painted in 1562, The Fall of the Rebel Angels is one of the most astonishing and visually overwhelming works in the history of Western art. Bruegel depicts the moment from the Book of Revelation when the Archangel Michael and his heavenly host cast Satan and his rebel angels out of Heaven — the fallen beings transforming mid-air into a writhing mass of grotesque creatures, insects, fish, and hybrid monsters as they tumble into the abyss.
The painting is a tour de force of imagination and technical mastery. Bruegel fills every inch of the canvas with extraordinary invention — no two figures are alike, and the sheer density of the composition creates a sense of cosmic chaos that is both terrifying and mesmerizing. At the top, the serene golden figures of the angels stand in luminous contrast to the pandemonium below.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) was the greatest Netherlandish painter of the 16th century. In this work he draws deeply on the fantastical tradition of Hieronymus Bosch, while bringing his own unique moral vision and painterly brilliance to bear.
This fine art print is reproduced on premium luster photo paper, capturing the extraordinary detail, rich color, and dramatic intensity of Bruegel's original with exceptional fidelity.
