Originally titled Blues for Lovers, Ballad in Blue (1964) is a British drama film directed by Paul Henreid. R&B and soul legend Ray Charles plays himself, bringing warmth and authenticity to the story of a newly blinded British boy he helps adjust to sightlessness. Charles performs some of his most beloved classics on screen, including "What'd I Say?", "I Got a Woman", and "Hit the Road Jack" — a rare and intimate glimpse of the genius at work.
The film features a cast including Mary Peach, Dawn Addams, and Tom Bell, and stands as one of the few films to capture Ray Charles in a dramatic role. Directed by Paul Henreid, best known for his role in Casablanca, the film blends jazz, blues, and human drama in a uniquely moving portrait of music, blindness, and compassion.
