The poster that made Alphonse Mucha famous overnight.
Gismonda is a lyric drama in four acts by Victorien Sardou, premiered in 1894 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris, starring the legendary Sarah Bernhardt. When the theatre needed a poster on short notice over the Christmas holidays, a little-known Czech artist named Alphonse Mucha was given the commission. The result was a sensation — a towering, Byzantine-inspired image of Bernhardt that stopped Paris in its tracks and launched one of the most celebrated careers in the history of poster art.
Mucha's Gismonda is a cornerstone of Art Nouveau and one of the most recognizable theatrical posters ever created.
A reproduction of this iconic 1894 French theatre poster.
