In their adult stage, butterflies and moths are important pollinators, but in their larval/caterpillar stage, some of them can be quite destructive. To list a few examples, the caterpillar of the cabbage butterfly (Pieris rapae) feeds on the leaves of members of the cabbage family, and is a well-known garden pest, as is the larva of the five-spotted hawkmoth (Manduca quinquemaculata) which feeds on tomato leaves.
